What this set actually is

Riichi is the Japanese variant and the one most people under thirty learned online. A Riichi set differs from a Chinese set in three ways: it has no flower tiles (136 tiles rather than 144), it includes three red fives — one in each suit — that count as bonus dora, and it ships with point sticks for keeping score across a session.

Tile size is smaller than Chinese sets, typically 26 mm high. This is deliberate: Japanese play uses a smaller table and a faster rhythm. Most Riichi sets also have a two-colour tile with a dark back, which makes face-down tiles in the wall easier to distinguish from discards.

If a listing calls a set "Japanese" but shows 144 tiles and no red fives, it is a Chinese set with Japanese branding. Check for the red fives in the photographs.

What sets it apart

  • Red fives included — a Chinese set cannot play standard Riichi rules without them
  • Point sticks for scoring, which online players have never had to think about
  • Compact tiles that fit four walls on a small table
