What this set actually is
Sets that came in a cardboard box or a soft bag suffer when they travel. A fitted case holds each tile in its own channel so nothing moves, and it makes counting the set at the end of the night a ten-second check for empty slots.
Choose by tile size and by whether you need rack slots. American cases are longer to accommodate four racks; Chinese and Riichi cases are near-square.
What sets it apart
- Fitted trays stop tiles rattling together, which is what chips corners
- Aluminium cases are the most protective; leatherette the lightest
- American cases need rack slots — a Chinese case will not take the racks
Who should buy it
Any set that goes to a club or a friend’s house every week.
