What this set actually is
These are not jade — real jade sets are antiques or commissions — but the translucent green acrylic with a gold-filled engraving is the look most people picture when they think of a mahjong set, and it photographs well, which is why it is the most-gifted set in the category.
They play perfectly well. Acrylic is dense, so the tiles have a satisfying weight, and the engraving is usually deeper than on budget melamine. The main practical note is size: most jade-style sets are size 38 or 40, which needs a table at least 36 inches square to build four walls without the corners touching.
Because the colour is in the material rather than on the surface, these do not fade. The paint fill in the engraving can wear on the most-handled tiles after years of play, and that is cosmetic.
What sets it apart
- The one set here that gets a reaction when the box opens
- Heavier and cooler to the touch than melamine — closer to the feel of old bone sets
- Usually sold a size up, so measure your table before ordering
